June 2014 Wrap Up & Whats Coming Up in July

Since I only really started reading consistently again ten days ago I don't have that much to share with you as a monthly wrap up. These are the books which I have read in June

Me and Mr Jones   Recipe for Love    The Fault in Our Stars   Cupcakes at Carrington'sThe Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic (Shopaholic, #1)

I loved all of these books and would recommend them all, if I had to pick a favourite it would be Cupcakes at Carrington's, I just loved all the characters in this book especially Georgie and I cannot wait to read the other two Carringtons books.

I am currently reading Appetite by Philip Kazan which I won off Goodreads and so far am really enjoying the descriptive language which he uses. Also in July I hope to read Perfect Strangers by Tasmina Perry and Just What Kind of Mother are You? by Paula Daly .

I have also signed up to take part in the #SexMeUpReadathon which is running from 21st to 25th July, for more details and to sign up visit Laura @ SheLoveToRead so I am hoping to get my hand on a couple of their recommendations before it starts.

What has been your favourite book this month and what are you planning to read next month I would love to know.

Firstly I won a copy of Philip Kazan's Appetite from Goodreads, thank you Goodreads and Orion. Second I picked up Just What Kind of Mother Are You? by Paula Daly from Asda and while at the hospital on Friday I bought The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella from the charity stall as I love this book and have not read it for a while.

Book Review - The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

17118893

What can I say about this book that hasn’t been said before? Not sure really except read this book!

The Fault in Our Stars is written through the eyes of Hazel who is suffering from terminal cancer but is on miracle drugs which are buying her some time. This is the story of what happens when she meets Augustus at the Cancer Kid Support Group.

This book is beautiful and it had me gripped from the first page, you really feel like you are there with Hazel and Gus as their story unfolds.  I really felt for Hazel as she struggles with her emotions towards Gus, she really fancies him but is scared to get too close as she doesn’t want him left devastated when she goes off as a “grenade”, however the inevitable happens and they fall in love.

Don’t be put off by thinking this book is about cancer like it suggests in the blurb, yes there is some elements of cancer in the book but the main plot centres around the growing love Hazel and Augustus have for each other.  It’s a book which explores what it is like to have your first love and all the emotions which go with that. It’s a book which really makes you think about the big question of what makes a “good life” whether it is one which is long and lasting till old age, one which is lived to the full experiencing as much as possible or one which has touched the lives of those around you. It makes you think about your own life and is a book you will think about long after you put it down.

Even though this book made me cry, I loved it and know it will be a book which I pick up again and again throughout my life. Go buy this book and then treasure it!

Book Review - Me and Mr Jones by Lucy Diamond

17272612

This was the first book by Lucy Diamond that I have read, actually the first book I’ve actually finished this year and I loved it.

This story is based around Lilian and Eddie Jones and their bed and breakfast Mulberry House. We learn that they want to retire from running the B&B and how they do not want to sell the house that has been their family home for over forty years but want one of their three sons Hugh, David or Charlie to take over, which one will it be?

The story is told from the perspective of women in the family which I love as they are all great characters which are easily distinguishable from each other.  Each of the women has their own issues which they deal with as the story progresses. Lilian first comes across as a bit mean to the wives but think she just wants the best for her sons. The worry from her husband’s health and the stress of running the B&B seem to have got to her, by the end she seems a lot happier.

Alicia is married to Hugh and she is about to turn forty, which is causing her to want some excitement in her life, which doesn’t turn out exactly as she plans. Emma is married to David. She is desperate for a baby and he has just lost his job. He seeks refuge at the B&B and this causes Emma to consider giving in to temptation, but will she?

Finally there is Izzy who has just met Charlie the youngest son. She wants to give in to his flirting but is running from her past; when it all catches up with her will she give in to Charlie’s advances?

I loved all of the characters in this book as they are believable and all have their own issues to resolve.  This book flows really well and it’s easy to follow the story even from the four different viewpoints of the women.  I would love there to be a sequel as I would love to know what each character was doing a year down the line.  I was hooked from the first page and definitely want to read some more of Lucy’s novels.

Welcome!

Hi and welcome to my new blog. My name is Joanne and I've started this blog as a way to record my thoughts on what I've read and hopefully help someone else choose what to read next. I would love to hear your thoughts on the books I have read and if you have any recommendations for what I should read next.

Thank you for stopping by, hope you come back soon
